National Ag Day is held every year on March 14 as an effort to tell the true story of American agriculture and remind citizens that agriculture is a part of all of us. The National Ag Day program encourages every American to understand how food and fiber products are produced and to appreciate the role agriculture plays in providing safe and affordable products because agriculture is essential to maintaining a strong economy, providing abundant career opportunities, and ensuring healthy food for everyone.
The stories of individual farmers, service professionals, builders, drivers, veterinarians and nutritionists are the cornerstone of cultivating an enriching discussion and understanding of what the agriculture industry really is. So often the meaning of our work gets lost in the day-to-day duties, minimized even further by the criticisms of the mis-informed. Our stories are not their rhetoric.
Our stories are of family, born and raised on the same plot of land as our forefathers. Stories of friendship, camaraderie, and support in times of strife, as well as success. Stories of hard work and hardship to raise healthy animals. Stories of sadness and loss when the day comes to say goodbye to those animals that we worked to hard to raise. Stories of hope and excitement at the arrival of our newest charges.
They are stories of entrepreneurship. Of tradition. Of community. It is your story and it is my story and though they are not the same, they are. Because we are all working to feed each other, to care for ourselves, to raise a family, support a friend, and build a life worth living. Your story is important. Don’t be afraid to tell it.
Our youth are telling their stories for Ag Day. Read the winning essay here. Support them by sharing your own!
National Ag Day is organized by the Agriculture Council of America. The ACA is a nonprofit organization composed of leaders in the agricultural, food and fiber community, dedicating its efforts to increasing the public’s awareness of agriculture’s role in modern society.
The VAL-CO Story:
Many many moons ago, the son of a Swiss immigrant living in rural Pennsylvania attended school to become a teacher. Upon graduation, he found he much preferred working with his hands – quite literally – and instead bought a machine shop. That machine shop, known as the Vallorbs Jewel Company, specialized in Swiss screw machining, and produced watch bearings and sapphire phonograph needles. As times and style changed, the shop was passed through generations, with each new phase bringing change and adaptation, while respecting the familial roots.
The family owned business expanded its capability, and introduced to its robust portfolio the Val Watering System. An ingenious idea that came about from a personal need and professional ability, the Val Watering System spurred the poultry industry into a whole new era of productivity and precision farming by introducing the enclosed nipple drinker system. The first success of its kind, but far from the last, the Val Watering System is still the leader in poultry watering today.
With the success of Vallorbs and Val Watering, growth was inevitable. Through acquisition and advancement, VAL-CO was born – crafted from the finest in feeding, fill systems, environmental controls, and ventilation. We’re still family owned. We’re still working hard. We’re still here to deliver the best poultry and swine equipment, the best live animal traps, the best precision machined parts, and the best customer service. Your mission is our mission, to feed a hungry world.
